Over 4m girls out of school in Nigeria – Minister

ABUJA – Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina has declared that over 4 million girls of school age are not in school in Nigeria.
The minister made this declaration weekend during an advocacy visit to states in the North East as part of a nationwide campaign.
Hajia Maina said, “rapid progress in girl’s enrolment, retention and completion will have to double as it is now, if Nigeria is to meet the Millennium Development Goals of achieving gender parity in education by 2015 and improve their participation in the socio-economic and political development of the nation.
She said the need for improved quality education and equal opportunities for both women and men in terms of access is essential to ensure that women of all ages acquire knowledge, capacities, aptitudes, skills and ethical values needed to develop and participate in national development.
The Minister explained that the term “gender equality does not mean women behaving like men but rather women being given the same rights and privileges, to achieve their full potentials as women”.

  4. This can be seen in the northern nigeria as people of south, east and west have come to notice that taining of a girl is an investment. the people of north should know that to train a girl is to train a generation but to train a man is to train one person.

  5. Most Nigerian women are lazy to the marrow . They dance about collecting boy friends that keep them funded , thinking they are smart . They earn bad reputation as flirts , and this affects their chances of getting married and sticking to their husband . The rate of infidelity today in Nigeria is on the increase . This is a result of greed and vanity amongst our young ladies . Morality has gone to the dogs . All they crave for is material wellbeing with no thoughts spared for righteousness and modesty . Imagine a jobless girl in her prime living in a comfortable appartment on borrowed time ,at the will of a sugar daddy or young rich man who spoils her with a car and possibly house helps and driver to compliment . The man has a wife and kids in his house . One day the mistress is lured into flirting out of long throat to the extent that she is caught by Mr. boyfriend ,and he throws her out instanta , she can easily turn to 419,or go with armed robbers or drug peddlers to ensure cuntinued funding . She would have limited alternatives because she rejected her opportunity to go to school and secure a sound foundation in life ...GOOD EDUCATION .NOT FUNICATION.

  6. You have completely absolved the men or sugar daddies as you put it of any wrong doing. Let me remind you that it takes two to tango.

Anyhow your comments dosent surprise me one bit, because it is the ussual thing for Africans to blame and play the gender/tribe/ religion/family/race... discrimination card. I think it will be alright to call it the "black man syndrom"

For a start, Nigerian men should start being moral and ethical; stop raping, molesting, abusing, taking advantage of ...the list goes on and on, and then we ll see the outcome!

  7. I agree it takes 2 to tango. But no woman is ever forced to leave her place of study to go out looking for men to pick her up for money to buy not books but rags in other to keep up Jane & Juliet whose parents buy expensive things because they are rich .No man forces a woman to be kept in an apartment doing nothing all day, only to eat & watch TV until the keeper comes round for her to strip & jump into bed . She collects money from him and goes shopping for rags, shoes and make up not stopping to think of the future . The keeper , of course is married and only sees her as a plaything until he finds another victim to replace the imcumbent toy-girl . As for rape ,some women, especially young girls, fake rape when they want , especially when they trap a man they believe is loaded and would most likely part with some good money to avoid scandal . It isn't easy to rape a woman unless she is knocked out physically, threatend seriously or drugged. Some women by the way they dress these days tend to invite sexual assault unto themselves . In those good old days ,when ladies dressed lady-like,how many cases of rape were we hearing? These days some of these girls dress in a way that leaves nothing to the imagination . They dress in ways that seem to say '' come and get it if you are a man '' In the end when the wolf strikes you'll here them cry passionately ''stop it I like it ''

We need to know the exact locations where these problems are occurring, and the action being taken to solve this.

  9. Where is the employments for those half-baked University graduates who are still roaming the street of Lagos and Abuja in search of jobs that never exist? That was the mess our so called leaders/looters have created for us. What motivates people to go to school is not just the certificate but the possibility of getting a job after completing their studies.

  10. The minister tailored her discussion to suit her office as minister for women affairs. In order to have a fair and balanced discussion, maybe there should also be a minister for men's affairs. The truth is that, education is living on past glory in Nigeria, whether of boys or girls. Recent survey shows that no university in Nigeria ranked among top ten in Africa. Are we the gi-ant or ant of Africa? There are hardworking Nigerians that earned their grades, there are others that blocked (paid) lecturers to graduate them, the difference is clear, because the taste of the pounded yam is in the pudding, that is why some of these graduates are unemployable. Thank God Mr. President was in the education system, so he knows the rot and decay in the system. In order to return to lost glory, our leaders should stop paying lip service to our standard of education, fund it adequately, and have inspectors of education that report back to the ministry of education.

  11. who told you Nigerian Graduates were half baked. you should be one of them

  12. Yes 3,9 million of them are from the north.Never wanted to be in the class room for fear of suffocating.Nose, mouth just everything closed.

  13. Mr minister, lets call a spade a spade. Over 4 million Northern Nigerian girls are out of school.

  14. How does this Hajira minister come to the four million number in a country that does not know its true population, a country where census population is a joke, it has never been the interest of the looters /leaders to know how many people living in that hole call Nigeria.

  15. There is no point wasting time on this narrow perspective of what needs to be done urgently (in terms of education) for Nigerian children - boys or girls. There needs to be a law to make it compulsory for all Nigerian children to be in school until they are 18. And yes their education must be free with free healthcare and at least one free balanced meal every school day. Yeah, I'm gearing up to hear a chorus of excuses why this is not possible. What a minute... if you consider the huge chunk of resources Nigeria is wasting on government and politics alone... In any case to truly move Nigeria to (overdue) literate and informed society Nigeria needs to make primary and secondary education free plus compulsory school attendance for any child under 18.

  16. Dear Blessing, I don't wish to join issues with u on this subject, but I would like u to admit that no man forces a girl out of her school of study to go looking for men that will take them out and to bed . They go looking for the men . Note that,if there are no givers ,there will be no takers ! If a woman does not listen to a man's toasting, the devil will be unemployed .As for rape , take it easy . Except for the really devlish cases of rape , most rape cases of fully developed women are faked , in some cases , to extort money from those they feel would rather part with some reasonable sums of money to avoid scandal because of their marriage or office they hold. U rightly wrote that it takes 2 to tango. U said it all ! Given the way young women dress these days, leaving little or nothing to the imagination , women should take a healthy slice of the blame . In days gone-by ,when ladies dressed respectfully, how many rape cases did we hear ' Don't tell me that men force women into an apartment to be kept as mistresses who must not go out to work. Only to stay in , eat , drink , watch the TV and wait for the keeper to call ,when he cares , to take her to bed. To some women that would spell good living. I have great respect for those women who wake up every morning to go to work . In fact treat them as equals , believe me while I see mistresses as bad influence on younger generation who may be robbed of ambition to gain a good education that will earn them respect.
