Tatum (Taraba) – The Kutep Community in Tatum Local Government Area of Taraba has adopted N50,000 as the bride price to be paid on any marriageable lady regardless of the tribe or custom of the suitors.
Speaking on Sunday at the first Kuteb Nation Worldwide Thanksgiving Service in Takum, the President of RCCN Church, Rev. Risae Yakubu, said that the policy was aimed at ensuring that ladies from the area were made affordable.
Yakubu said that the rule applied to all irrespective of the tribe of the suitor or the background of the lady.
“People who used to fear marrying Kutep ladies because of the high cost of bride price can now come.”
“With the minimum wage already implemented by Gov. Suntai, your one month salary can finish it.”
He said that the thanksgiving was in appreciation of the fact that God had restored relative peace, prosperity and glory of the Takum Chiefdom.
According to him, people of all races could come to Takum and do their normal business and leave in peace.
He noted that among other things, God had restored love, trust and friendship between the Kutebs and the neighbouring tribes.
“We are delighted that our neighbours — the Jukun, Chamba, Tiv, Ichen, Yukuben, Igbo, Yoruba, Tigun, Ndoro and Hausa among others –, have joined us in this declaration of thanksgiving.”
In his address at the occasion, Rev. Dr. Caleb Ahima, who is the Secretary-General of TEKAN, with headquarters in Jos, urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, and politicians to guide the younger generation on the need for peaceful co-existence to bring about development.
“We need to tell God that the troubles of the past that destabilised this area will not repeat itself so that the ruins of the wars will be rebuilt,” he said.
In his remarks, Gov. Danbaba Suntai, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, commended the Kuteb Nation Worldwide for their initiative at ensuring that peace was restored in the area.
Suntai pointed out that returning to God was the ultimate and assured the people of Takum that the state government was prepared to cooperate with them to improve the lot of the people.
He informed them that the bill for all equipment supplied for the completion of the Takum General Hospital had been paid.
He said that the facility would be ready for use by the end of the year, while the hospital in Lisam, in Ussa local government, would be completed in the first quarter of 2012.

how can one month salary finish it. We are cyring for 18K and the governors are saying they cannot pay, you are here telling us to pay some 50K as bride price that is more than 2 months of honest work. Did these elders whom I think are already married put the interest of the youths into consideration before coming with this move? How much was the previous diary before than they are telling us they reduced to 50K? Nothing you will not hear from my country.
ReplyDeletedowry was never aimed to exploit people, but to accord our culture values. How many months do I have to serve before i can get myself a wife from this community.
You did not consider what the bride price was before it was lowered to the current rate. Certainly that's the low point of this report because it did not say what the bride price was for readers to make sense of the new rate. Now to those who would be hasty and tell us why bride brice is ancient practice and how westerners do not pay bride price... remember N50,000 will not buy fitting engagement ring in the western world.
ReplyDeleteAffordable??? What a concept for marital exchange. Do you afford a woman? This term applied to marital union is somewhat odd to me. I wonder if the union of man and woman in marriage has become a haggling act in the mindset of this speaker who seems to be portraying the woman in marriage as an affordable commodity. I don't think this is helpful to the woman who is not only equal in dignity and identity to the man but also deserves his respect, recognition and appreciation.
ReplyDeleteIf you folks cannot pay fifty T for a bride prize in Naija, then you guys are not prepared to settle down yet...if you really want something good in love my friends, you got to spend some liquid for it and stop whining as whiners are losers period!
ReplyDeleteRev. Risae Yakubu, said that the policy was aimed at ensuring that ladies from the area were made affordable. I feel terribly sad reading this section of the write up. "policy to ensure that ladies are made affordable?" is this what bride price is all about? selling of the female child like garri, meat, beer, cars etc? no wonder they are also been treated like such purchased items by men and their families- been shared like every other possession by the man's relatives when he dies or been used by groom and family since she was bought and paid for. A Pastor in the 21st century could say this? Shame!
ReplyDeleteI think you are ill informed. When a man pays dowry he has not bought the lady. What he has done is to show good faith that he is capable and
ReplyDeletewilling to take care of his wife. When you give a
gift you do not ask some thing in return otherwise
it becomes a bribe which is abomination. Gift like
dowry is a show of love and appreciation. It is not
purchase price. It is a ritual practiced by many cultures through the ages.
It is amazing how some cultures impose price tag on women within the community. More is given and more is expected.
ReplyDeleteFamilies from The Kutep Community in Tatum Local Government Area of Taraba should protect their investment to improve quality.
"N50,000 as the bride price to be paid on any marriageable lady regardless of the tribe or custom of the suitors". Does that include those with questionable characters?
Widespread of sexual immorality and exposure to other sexual acts including abortion that is very common in today's age is not getting better.
To my understanding, the federal minimum wage is N18, 000 which some States found it difficult to adopt, only Imo State approved little over the minimum N20, 000 to its citizens. Therefore, N50, 000 as the bride price remains at a higher reach to the common people.
So sad to read that we put price tags on women as if they are commodity. This barbaric act by Nigerians should be abolished by law. Women are priceless in the same way every human's life is priceless. Let people marry for love without "buying" at whatever price the so-called community demands. Lets value our women and stop this satanic practice.
ReplyDeleteExpand First N50,000 is on a high side EXCEPT that include everything. And I meant EVERTHING. Am I allow to negotiate or this is firm? To make women "affordable?" So, pastor, after paying this 50k, do I still have to give in-laws anything when we go pay them visits? Or when in-laws lose a family member or celebrating special occasions, do we still have to pay? Now, do we pay the same for a virgin and a "whore"? The story goes on and on. Lord have mercy!
