In a state-wide broadcast to the people of the state yesterday, the governor wondered why some Nigerians would, at this time of the country’s development, resort to killing one another after an election that was adjudged free and fair.
“As a result, countless lives have been lost and property destroyed,” Obi lamented. He appealed to Ndi Anambra to remain calm and not resort to reprisal attacks. He warned that any retaliatory action would cast Ndigbo in bad light and disturb the peace that “we are enjoying in the state.
“The presidential election of April 16, 2011, from which Dr. Goodluck Jonathan emerged victorious was no doubt the most important of all the elections lined up in the country this year.
“The election has been declared free and fair by both local and international observers. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been commended for its commitment and sincerity in the entire exercise.
“Sadly, rather than celebrate the dawn of a new democratic dispensation in our country, some people are on the streets in some parts of the country, protesting the result of that election, even though there are clearly spelt out avenues for seeking redress in electoral matters.”
Obi said he is in constant touch with security agencies to ensure that the peace existing in the state is sustained, just as he requested that any person who suspects any move capable of endangering the prevailing peace in Anambra should report it to the police.
Similarly, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has condemned what the wanton and unnecessary killings in the North resulting from the released presidential election result last Sunday.
In a statement issued after a meeting at the Freedom House, Okwe over the riots, MASSOB said the presidential election was peaceful, credible, free and fair.
MASSOB, in the statement signed by its National Director of Information, Uchenna Madu, deplored the killing of innocent Nigerians, particularly Ndi-Igbo in the North.
The group warned that “we will not fold our hands and watch the killings of Igbo in the northern part of Nigeria; that if the killing of innocent people, particularly Ndi-Igbo continues in the next 24 hours, that there will be no guarantee that the perpetrators of such evil acts will not be challenged.”
The group advised Ndi-Igbo to remain calm wherever they are in Nigeria and await further instructions, and called on those, who may need assistance and attention to contact these hot lines: 08125694759, 08063425055.
