Unknown Gunmen Kill Police Inspector, District Head

A police inspector attached to Borno Government House, Maina Kadai was on Friday morning shot dead in Maiduguri by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram, with two other persons, including another policeman and a district head were also shot in separate attacks.
Our correspondent learnt that the district head of Mairari in the metropolis was killed on Thursday night while the other police was lucky as he reportedly sustained serious injury from the gun shot.
The police inspector, who was attached to the escort vehicle of the state governor at the Maiduguri Government House, was reportedly shot at about 7 am on Friday. Sources said the inspector was on his way to his duty post at the Government House when he was attacked by the gunmen.
An eye witness who does not want his name in print, said the assailants were waiting on a motorbike at a railway crossing around the State Low Cost Housing Estate in the metropolis early in the morning in expectation of the movement of the inspector to duty. “He was shot as soon as he got to the railway crossing on his motorcycle,” the source disclosed.
A police source said the assailants might have trailed the police inspector from his house around the area, adding that some one might have hinted the gunmen about the movement of the policemen from his house on the fateful day.
Our correspondent reports that the police intensified the stop and search operation on Friday in some parts of the state even as some residents especially pedestrians were asked to raise their arms to ensure thorough checking.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abdullahi Lawal said there was nothing strange about the check points mounted by the men and officers of the Borno Command in Maiduguri on Friday morning, stressing that “it was a usual effort to curb the menace of Boko Haram.”
He said: “We cannot seat down and watch the killing in the state like that and that is why we intensified our stop and search exercise. but all the same, we want members of the public to cooperate with us in our bid to tackle this problem
