Early results from polling units for the National Assembly elections yesterday have produced upsets across the country, as some top politicians and government officials did not post impressive reports at the polling units and/or wards, while some maintained their stands.

Prominent among those who may be shocked by the outcome of the polls is President Goodluck Jonathan whose ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, according to preliminary results, lost in two polling units in the State House to the candidates of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Most of the results would need to be authenticated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The results pasted at State House polling Unit 1 indicated that the CPC candidate polled 300 votes, as against 15 by the PDP. Also, at the Polling Unit 2, the CPC got 254 votes as against 26 by the PDP. At another polling unit on Durban Street, Wuse 2, Abuja, the CPC candidate for the House of Representatives won with 205 votes as against 61 votes by the PDP candidate, while  for the Senate seat the CPC candidate led with 177 votes, while the PDP had 59 votes. Several other political parties’ candidates obtained some votes.

Also at Vice President Namadi Sambo’s polling unit in Kaduna State yesterday, the CPC was in early lead. While the PDP polled 115 for the Senate seat, the CPC candidate polled 265 votes.

Apart from President Jonathan and his deputy, Sambo, top PDP leaders who lost at their wards include the Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT), former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello. They lost their wards to the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

In Katsina State, at the Katsina Club polling unit, just behind the Government House in Katsina, Governor Ibrahim Shema’s PDP lost the votes to the CPC candidate. While the CPC got 219 votes, the PDP had 98 votes. The ACN was third with 13 votes.

From Enugu State, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu is in the lead, as PDP candidates are said to have won in the polling units in Anmiri, Udi and Awgu areas of the state. By implication, candidates into the Senate and House of Representatives under the banner of the PDP are favoured in the polls.

In Benue State, early results showed that Senate President David Mark and former PDP National Chairman, Barnabas Gemade are in early lead in Benue Zone A and C respectively. There are, however, indications that the opposition ACN may clinch most of the House of Representatives seats. Voters turnout was impressive.
